The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that Halloween brings a definite rise in motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians. To make sure your children stay safe while trick-or-treating this year, keep these important safety tips in mind:
- Teach your children about traffic safety. Make sure they know to cross streets carefully and be watching for cars at all times.
- Make sure younger children are supervised by an adult at all times.
- Make your children more visible to drivers. Add reflective tape to their costumes.
- Encourage children to stay together and not wander off alone. Remind them to stay in areas that are safe with plenty of lighting.
- Face masks may be fun, but they can obstruct your child's view. Use non-toxic face paint instead.
- Tripping can be very dangerous if a child ends up in the street in the path of an oncoming car. So avoid long flowing costumes.
